Main Areas of Focus of the Work of the Hindemith Institute
The Hindemith Institut Frankfurt is the centre of Hindemith research.
Hindemith, who came into contact with nearly all areas of musical life as composer, instrumentalist, conductor, pedagogue, music theoretician, musicologist and organiser, left an extensive legacy that is one of the most important sources concerning music and views of music during the first half of the twentieth century. It is preserved at the Hindemith Institut Frankfurt and made accessible to the public there.
The Institute is the edition headquarters of the historical-critical Complete Edition of his works, and also publishes and supervises the Hindemith Yearbook, the Hindemith Forum and the series Frankfurter Studien. It organises exhibitions, symposia and lectures, also organising a concert series in Hindemith Cabinet located in Frankfurt's Kuhhirtenturm (Cowherds' Tower), established as a memorial for the composer.
In addition, the Institute cultivates contacts with musicians and musicologists from around the world and also to institutions concerned with music. The archive materials of the Hindemith Institut Frankfurt are available on location to guests for scholarly work. We request a written advance notification containing a brief description of the research content and of the purpose of research.
All audio documents from the estate of Paul Hindemith were left to the German Radio Archive in Frankfurt for copying and brought together with the documents there. Out of this extensive stock, the German Radio Archive prepares copies of historical recordings and those not easily accessible upon request.
