New Recordings
Hindemith’s composition Mainzer Umzug [Mainz Carnival procession] has now been recorded for the very first time by the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Mainz under the direction of Hermann Bäumer. Hindemith’s ‘public festivities’ piece was composed in 1962 in response to a commission issued by the City of Mainz in celebrations marking its 2000-year anniversary. The libretto for this work characterised by local colouring was penned by the author Carl Zuckmayer who grew up in Mainz. Additional works featured on the CD include the brilliant and vividly colourful Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber (1943), the Prelude to the Requiem When Lilacs last in the Dooryard Bloom’d (1946) and the famous Carnival piece “Narhalla March” also quoted by Hindemith in his Mainzer Umzug as a humorous encore.
