New Edition: Klavierlieder II
The following lieder composed between 1933 and 1939 in Berlin, Frankfurt am Main and Bluche on texts by a variety of authors have been published in Volume VI,2 Klavierlieder II of the Hindemith Complete Edition:
4 Lieder nach Texten von Matthias Claudius (1933)
4 Lieder nach Texten von Friedrich Rückert (1933)
Vier Lieder nach Texten von Friedrich Hölderlin (1933)
Drei Lieder nach Texten von Wilhelm Busch (1933)
4 Lieder nach Texten von Novalis (1933)
Vier Lieder nach Texten des Angelus Silesius (1935)
Vier Lieder nach Gedichten von Friedrich Hölderlin (1935)
Lieder nach Texten von Clemens Brentano (1936)
Das Köhlerweib ist trunken (Gottfried Keller) (1936)
Der Einsiedler (Agostinho da Cruz) (1939)
Unter Feinden (Friedrich Nietzsche) (1939)
Die Sonne sinkt (Friedrich Nietzsche) (1939)
With the exception of the lied Das Ganze, nicht das Einzelne (Friedrich Rückert) which appeared as a supplement to the Zeitschrift für Musik in 1933, these lieder were never published during Hindemith’s lifetime. Some of the compositions have been lost: the manuscripts were most probably destroyed during the Second World War. The sketches of the lieder which can be allocated to individual works have been produced in facsimile: alternatively, a reference is provided for an already issued publication. Furthermore, Das Marienleben (Rainer Maria Rilke) has been published in its new version on which Hindemith worked between 1936 to 1947. The genesis of the new version is documented through intermediate versions as far as reasonably possible.
