This new volume of the Hindemith Complete Edition contains the ballet Nobilissima Visione in the version for large orchestra of 1939. This ballet, which depicts stations in the life of St. Francis of Assisi, was composed in 1938 in collaboration with the choreographer and dancer LĂ©onide Massine, at that time artistic director of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. It received its world premiere, in the version for small orchestra, in London under Hindemith's direction in July 1938.
