Hindemith Concerts in Frankfurt
“At the end of the last year and the beginning of this, I completed a further opus, a big cello concerto with orchestra or, more exactly, a symphony with cello obligato. That was a real grind!”, Hindemith wrote in early summer of 1916 about his Cello Concerto Op. 3. The American cellist Alisa Weilerstein will perform this impressive work on 3 and 4 March 2016 together with the hr Symphony Orchestra in the Great Hall of the Alte Oper in Frankfurt. The conductor will be Marek Janowski, who for many decades has been considered a leading Hindemith specialist.
The spectacular success of the Kammermusik No. 1, Op. 24 No. 1 in 1922 consolidated Hindemith‘s reputation as the most prominent protagonist of the musical avant-garde. This provocative piece for twelve solo instruments has long been a mainstay of the repertoire of the Ensemble Modern, which will give a guest performance on 10 March 2016 at the Alte Oper.
The Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by C.M. v. Weber (1943), originally a ballet project, has been Hindemith‘s most successful orchestral work of all ever since its world premiere in 1944. It will be on the programme of the hr Symphony Orchestra on 12 March 2016. The conductor of this concert in the Mozart Hall of the Alte Oper will be the Rumanian-born Cristian Măcelaru, who first receieved international attention in 2012 when he stood in for Pierre Boulez with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Today he is Conductor in Residence with the Philadelphia Orchestra.
