Hindemith Competition of the Walter Witte Viola Foundation
For decades, the Hindemith Competition of the Walter Witte Viola Foundation has been considered a prominent podium for the current elite of violists studying at German music academies. Alongside an evaluation of the present level of attainment through self-reflection, the Hindemith Competition enables soloists to measure their abilities acquired at the academy against competition from all over Germany, thus forming another important link between instrumental instruction and the soloist’s career.
Works by Paul Hindemith are required repertoire for all participants, both in the preliminary round and during the finals. In this way, the Walter Witte Viola Foundation honours the pioneering achievements of the composer and violist Hindemith, who composed seven sonatas and four concertos for his instrument between 1919 and 1939.
The five-member jury consists of high-ranking soloists and pedagogues at German music academies.
