Kleine Sonate für Cello und Klavier
The Kleine Sonate für Cello und Klavier was composed in May 1942 in New Haven where the composer, having emigrated from Nazi Germany, had been appointed Professor of Music Theory in 1940. It belongs to an entire series of smaller cello works composed by Hindemith during the 1930s and 1940s for his own domestic music-making. All these pieces were written with the composer’s wife Gertrud in mind, who had learnt to play the cello as an adult. The pieces are written at a technical level in accordance with her proficiency on the instrument.
The individual issue is made in accordance with the musical text of the Complete Edition: Paul Hindemith. Sämtliche Werke, Bd. VIII, 3, Mainz 2001.
