Ceasefire
After the defeat of Russia in 1917, the German military command wanted to turn the situation in the west to its advantage prior to the arrival of American troops in the spring of 1918. The great German western offensive to the south of Arras began in March, continuing until July near Ypern, between Soissons and Reims, near Nouyon, on the Marne and in the Champagne.
The allied counteroffensive in July and the English attack near Amiens on 8 August, so-called «Black Friday», forced the German forces to make a constant retreat until the German supreme command called for a ceasefire in September 1918.
