Drawings
Hundreds of – mostly small-scale – pictures found in the composer's estate give evidence of Hindemith's remarkable talent as a draftsman. He drew them on the most varied occasions in music manuscripts and calendars, on napkins and tablecloths, envelopes or memos. They usually show fantasy creatures in the form of animals or people. Lion figures, found in many drawings, symbolise Gertrud Hindemith, who was born under the zodiacal sign of Leo the Lion.
Hindemith's self-designed Christmas cards are especially original; he sent them each year to friends and acquaintances.
